Austrian President and Chancellor Meet with Yang Jiechi

On July 26, 2010, Austrian President Heinz Fischer and Chancellor Werner Faymann met respectively with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in Salzburg.

Fischer recalled with pleasure his January visit to China and asked Yang to convey his greetings to Chinese President Hu Jintao. In the past 40 years since Austria and China established diplomatic ties, bilateral relations have witnessed substantial development, with frequent exchange of high-level visits, fruitful outcome in trade and other areas, as well as close communication on international affairs, said Fischer during the meeting. He added that Austria has good aspiration for enhancing friendly cooperation with China and hopes to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties along with China next year to push bilateral ties for greater development.

Yang conveyed President Hu's greetings to Fischer. Yang said leaders of the two countries had reached a series of important consensus on Sino-Austrian relations during President Fischer's successful visit to China in January. Over the past half a year, the consensus has been or is being implemented. The minister also noted the two countries had maintained high-level exchanges and achieved new progress in bilateral cooperation in such areas as infrastructure construction, new energy, environmental protection, civil aviation and tourism. During the visit to Austria by the Chinese trade and investment promotion mission, the businesses of the two countries signed several contracts, injecting new vigor into sustained growth of bilateral trade. Yang said that China attaches great importance to ties with Austria and is ready to take the opportunity of the celebrations on the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties to further promote friendly exchanges and mutually beneficial cooperation and push forward bilateral ties.

While meeting with Faymann, Yang conveyed Premier Wen’s greetings to the Austrian Chancellor. Yang pointed out that a good relationship between China and Austria is in the interest of both sides and also conducive to the development of China-Europe relations. China is ready to work with Austria to strengthen dialogue, deepen mutual trust, expand cooperation and enhance coordination on major international issues, said Yang.

Yang congratulated Austria on the opening of the Salzburg Festival, expressing hope that the event will become a bond of mutual understanding and friendship between both peoples.

Faymann asked Yang to convey his greetings to Premier Wen. He recalled his visit two months ago to Shanghai for the Austria National Pavilion Day at the World Expo, and said China's effective response to the global financial crisis and vigorous development had deeply impressed him. He hoped he would have the opportunity to pay an official visit to China so as to deepen his understanding of the country and promote friendly cooperation. Austria attaches importance to enhancing cultural exchanges between the two countries and welcomes China to participate in the Salzburg Festival.
